Barton Malow Company was contracted by Ryan Companies to perform the place and finish concrete slab work on the New Kroger Groceries chains and Customer Fulfillment Center located in N. Groveland, FL. This distribution center uses highly sensitive, state of the art robotics designed to offer 1-2-hour home delivery to customers within a 100-mile radius. Due to extremely high tolerances needed on the mezzanine level that the machines sit on, the columns of the structure were to be placed on stand alone footers. After multiple meetings between Ryan, Barton Malow and Speedy Concrete Cutting, it was decided to core the newly placed slabs versus using the typical block out method used in similar situations. This plan would ensure a more accurate placement and a better finished product. This would require (232) 30” diameter core holes in the 6” concrete slab on grade, 1 week after the slab was poured. Just to keep things interesting, Speedy Concrete Cutting was tasked to perform all the cores in a 2-week time frame to meet the accelerated schedule. To further challenge our abilities, the owner did not want anchor holes in the slab, feeling the appearance and potential maintenance requirements weren’t acceptable. Speedy was tasked with developing a methodology to drill accurately placed holes without setting anchors of any kind. Thanks to the innovative thinking of Speedy Concrete Cutting’s mechanics, Jose Sala and Joshua Leiter, we were able to design and fabricate a self-contained hydraulic core drill cart. The drill was mounted on the cart with the CB35 Hydraulic unit as a counterweight and included a vacuum system to secure the cart to the slab. This system worked as well, if not better than we expected. Philippe Ocampo and Cody Sexsmith put the new system to the test averaging 25 holes a day each, including vacuuming and removing all slurry. The first week was such a success, we quickly got ahead of what the customer could layout and reduced our forces to just Flip drilling and Gus Canciatti doing water control and clean up. We also had a cameo appearance by James Daniels to so some slab sawing the customer needed while we were on site. Overall working with the guys at Barton Malow Company has been a great experience. The efforts by the Speedy Concrete Cutting mechanics to design, build and test the system, ensured we had a safe and productive process in the field. Encompassed with the hard work and dedication of operators, this project was very successful. At Ryan Companies, we believe the value of the buildings we design, develop, finance, manage and construct is about more than dollars and cents – it’s also about the value they bring to the people who use them and the communities that surround them.
