Throughout my 34 years in this drilling and sawing industry, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some really talented individuals. I acquired a great deal of knowledge from each of these individuals and I am very grateful for the time they put into my growth in life and business. This industry has been good to me and my family. The years I’ve spent in this industry have gone by like a blink of an eye and for me, the end of my time in this industry is getting closer. Now that I am a fossil in this industry, I wanted to share my views on what it takes to be professional field operator. As a field operator I always felt like I was going to school for the next level in this industry, I had a willingness to learn. I learned things from successful CEO’s of billion-dollar companies and from a common day laborer pushing a broom. Always keep an open mind and you will you learn something new every day. I quickly learned that being the most productive operator was only part of the equation. As a field operator you are provided the opportunity to promote yourself every day. You get to show that you are disciplined, efficient, consistent and dependable. You get to accept the responsibility every day to protect the company’s liability and ensure profit for the future growth of the entire organization. One field operator can effectively control a company’s existence. The quality that set me apart from others was my willingness to train. Not only new people walking through the door for the first time, but the people I worked with every day. I always felt training was the key to success, by building more operators like me. Sharing knowledge and helping someone learn a trade to support their families was always rewarding to me. Now that I’ve held every possible position in the professional drilling and sawing industry. Its humorous to me that my career advancement actually came from training people. Earning their trust and respect and pushing them to be better. Training people actually made me a leader a long time ago. Training operators showed me how to deal with many different people and personalities. Training constantly challenged me to change or adjust my approach on how to communicate with people from different walks of life. I’m happy to work for a company that believes in training and has created a program to streamline the process. Our trainers have the ability to promote themselves and become the future leaders of this company. Our trainees can follow the same path. Set goals for yourselves and be disciplined and see them through. I’ve been in management for 20 years now and it all started with training operators.
